Obama Admin Unveils new Truck Fuel Standards

The Obama administration on Tuesday unveiled new fuel efficiency standards for heavy-duty vehicles, which it said would both reduce carbon emissions and save drivers billions of dollars at the pump. The standards, unveiled as President Barack Obama enters the last five months of his final term, apply to heavy duty vehicles which account for 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and oil use in the US transportation sector, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Ford to Invest US$75M in Autonomous Vehicle Sensor Company

DETROIT—Ford and the Chinese search engine company Baidu will each invest US$75 million in Velodyne, a company that makes laser sensors that help guide self-driving cars. Velodyne, based in The Morgan Hill, California, says it will use the $150 million investment to expand design and production and reduce the cost of its sensors. The laser sensors are called Lidar, which stands for light, detection and ranging. They can also be used in conventional vehicles as part of driver assist systems such as automatic emergency braking.

Higher sales of machinery and transportation equipment products pushed manufacturing sales in Canada up 0.8% to $50.2 billion in June, following a 1.0% decline in May. According to new figures released by Statistics Canada, the machinery industry gained 5.8 per cent at $2.7 billion, following five consecutive monthly declines, while the transportation equipment industry added 1.4 per cent to total $10.7 billion in June.
